Focus on Reading is an initiative that, we at Lurnea Public School, are using in years 3-6 to improve teaching and learning with a focus on reading.

Teachers are involved in a range of professional learning experiences that will provide them with additional strategies and frameworks that will help children comprehend what they read.
Students learn about the 6 comprehension strategies that can assist them in improving their reading ability. They are:-
- Making Connections
- Visualising
- Questioning
- Monitoring
- Predicting
- Summarising
The program emphasises and highlights the importance and use of:
- rich texts, particularly subject-based texts, multi-modal texts and the types of texts that interest and motivate learners in the middle years
- rich talk of the kind that encourages them to 'show their thinking' through talk
- 'deliberate' teaching that involves planning for explicit instruction through modelled, guided and independent teaching
